About Gamma Sigma

Since it’s founding in 1946, Gamma Sigma, The Georgian Society, Inc. has always done things differently.  Founded as “The Lay Back and Whack it Club” by WWII veterans, our founding fathers found the tradition of hazing to be nonsensical, and the act of discrimination as unjust.  Among our founding fathers was a Jewish man, one of the first in the fraternal system. ΓΣ accepted it’s first African American pledges into its membership years before the civil rights movement and in the late 1960s, we had our first openly gay brothers. In 1971, we began accepting women into our society.  Years later, the national fraternity we had been a part of for 20 years ordered us to return to single sex status to which we refused and disassociated with them, fighting for our belief in equality.
The history of Gamma Sigma has been called “A Workshop in Democracy” by the US Congress and has been formally commended by Hubert Humphrey, Richard Nixon and Eleanor Roosevelt.
We’re looking for individuals to join our family who value diversity, respect the rights of others, and are seeking to add to our traditions of love, trust, and respect.  To join our membership, there is no criteria such as race, major, year, special interest, eye color, foot size or anything else.  Increase your tolerance and join this social living experiment.
Gamma Sigma was founded on the belief that hazing is not necessary to initiate an individual into our society. Hazing is a nonsensical practice that belittles the victim and tries to have them conform to the expectations of the fraternity system they are trying to join. Gammas prize our diversity more than any other virtue. We want our pledges to continue to be unique because it is that individuality which has defined us throughout the years.

We ARE NOT a fraternity without a house. Not only do we have a house, but it is one of the oldest existing homes in all of New Brunswick and holds as much historical value as many of the Rutgers campus buildings and dormitories. Unfortunately, as you may have heard, our house suffered from an electrical fire and we are still in the rebuilding process. If you decide to pledge our organization, you WILL have a home to call your own. Fraternity means family, family sticks together. Whether we are in our famed “big blue,” out in the park, or halfway across the country, there is always a Gamma nearby and a family member that will be there for you if you need them.
